Ryder Cup player hits his girlfriend with a wayward drive

Thomas Pieters achieved international recognition after his storming performance at last year’s Ryder Cup. His 4-1-0 showing was the only glimmer of light in a horror week for the Europeans. Not only is the “Belgian Bomber” the complete golfer, he’s the proud partner of Eva Bossaerts.

Eva hails from the same city as Pieters, and maintains a very low profile. She accompanied him to the start of last year’s Ryder Cup, mixing it up with the wives and girlfriends of both teams. If you needed anymore proof that golfers are sport’s greatest overachievers…

Golf is a dangerous spectator sport, a fact not helped by the behaviour of certain professionals, as Shane Lowry was quick to point out during last week’s Genesis Open:

“What’s it gonna take for players to start shouting fore. A signed ball or glove is no good to anyone if they are seriously injured???”

It wasn’t difficult to see which golfer the Irishman was targeting; Pat Perez failed to shout “fore” on three separate occasions at the Riviera Country Club. It was a disgraceful showing of selfishness. Choosing to benefit from the cushion of an unaware gallery is one of the most callous acts in professional golf, and it’s endemic. Tiger Woods was a longstanding beneficiary of the “spectator wall,” choosing to withdraw the venom from his hooks by keeping his mouth firmly closed.

Pieters doesn’t deserve to be lumped in with this bunch. The affable Belgian was clearly distressed when he discovered the victim of his errant drive was his number one fan, girlfriend Eva. The aftermath was caught on camera, with a mortified Pieters taking the time to console his girlfriend. The nearby fan backed away and told Pieters “that is awesome,” the 25-year-old pro responded in the most respectful way possible: “No.”
